English Translation
The Blessed One who is far from defilements, perfectly self-awakened,
Consummate in knowledge and conduct, sublime, knower of the worlds,
Unsurpassed trainer of those who can be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, awakened, blessed.
Who taught the Dhamma, beautiful in the beginning, beautiful in the middle, beautiful in the end, who proclaimed the spiritual life of absolute perfection and purity.
I pay supreme homage to that Blessed One, I bow my head to that Blessed One.
[Morning Praise of the Dhamma]:
The Dhamma well-expounded by the Blessed One,
Visible here & now, timeless, inviting all to come & see, leading inwards, to be personally realized by the wise.
I pay supreme homage to that Dhamma, I bow my head to that Dhamma.
[Morning Praise of the Sangha]:
The Sangha of the Blessed One’s disciples who have practiced well,
Who have practiced straightforwardly, methodically, with integrity.
This is the Sangha of the Blessed One’s disciples — the four pairs, the eight kinds of noble persons.
I pay supreme homage to that Sangha, I bow my head to that Sangha.

To that Blessed One, I offer my praise and devotion, for my long-term welfare and happiness.
Let us now pay evening homage to the Blessed One.
Homage to the Blessed One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One. (×3)
[Reflection on Impermanence & Dispassion]:
‘All conditioned things are impermanent’ — when one sees this with wisdom, each is disenchanted with suffering. This is the path to purity.
‘All conditioned things are stressful’ — when one sees this with wisdom, each is disenchanted with suffering. This is the path to purity.
‘All phenomena are not-self’ — when one sees this with wisdom, each is disenchanted with suffering. This is the path to purity.

May all beings, limitless and infinite, share in the merits
that I have made now, and other merits made by me before.
Those who are dear to me and virtuous, such as my mother and father,
those seen by me or unseen, and others who are neutral or hostile.
Beings existing in the world, in the three realms and four states of birth,
with five, one, or four aggregates, wandering from existence to existence.
Those who know of this dedication of merit, may they rejoice in it themselves,
as for those who do not know, may the devas inform them of it.
By reason of rejoicing in the merits given by me,
may all beings always live free from enmity and in happiness.
May they attain the secure path, and may their wholesome hopes be fulfilled.

aspiring to safety. Tell me the highest blessing.
Not associating with fools, associating with the wise,
paying homage to those worthy of homage: this is the highest blessing.
Living in a suitable locality, having made merit in the past,
directing oneself rightfully: this is the highest blessing.
Great learning, skill in crafts, a well-trained discipline,
and well-spoken speech: this is the highest blessing.
Support for mother and father, cherishing of wife and children,
and peaceful occupations: this is the highest blessing.
Generosity, righteous conduct, assistance to relatives,
and blameless actions: this is the highest blessing.
Avoiding and abstaining from evil, refraining from intoxicants,
and vigilance in virtue: this is the highest blessing.
Respect, humility, contentment, gratitude,
and timely hearing of the Dhamma: this is the highest blessing.
Patience, compliance, seeing those who have gone forth,
and timely discussions on the Dhamma: this is the highest blessing.
Austerity, spiritual life, seeing the Noble Truths,
and realizing Unbinding (Nirvana): this is the highest blessing.
A mind that is unshaken when touched by the worldly winds,
sorrowless, dustless, secure: this is the highest blessing.
Having accomplished these things, they are everywhere undefeated;
they go everywhere in safety: this is their highest blessing.

English Translation
This is what should be done by one who is skilled in goodness, having understood the path of peace:
Let him be able, upright, and straightforward, easy to speak to, gentle, and free from pride.
Contented and easily supported, with few duties and simple in livelihood,
controlled in senses, wise, modest, and not greedily attached to families.
Let him not commit any slight wrong that the wise might afterwards censure.
May all beings be happy and secure; may they be happy in themselves.
Whatever breathing beings there may be, whether weak or strong, without exception,
whether long, large, medium, short, small, or round;
Those seen or unseen, those dwelling near or far, those born or to be born —
may all beings be happy in themselves.
Let no one deceive another, or despise anyone anywhere, or through anger or ill-will wish harm to another.
Just as a mother would protect her only child with her life, even so, let one cultivate a boundless heart towards all beings.
Let one cultivate a boundless heart of loving-kindness towards the entire world —
above, below, and all around — unobstructed, free from hate and enmity.
Whether standing, walking, sitting, or lying down, as long as one is awake,
let one maintain this mindfulness. This is called the supreme dwelling here.
Not falling into wrong views, but virtuous and endowed with vision, discarding greed for sensual pleasures, one will never be born in a womb again.

English Translation
Creating a thousand hands with weapons armed, Mara the evil one, seated on his war-elephant Girimekhala, came with his frightful army. The Lord of Sages conquered him through the power of generosity and other virtues. By this power, may yours be the victory and blessing.
More fierce even than Mara was Alavaka, the fierce and stubborn yakkha (demon) who fought the whole night through. The Lord of Sages conquered him through the power of patience and self-control. By this power, may yours be the victory and blessing.
Nalagiri, the king elephant, highly charging, raging like a forest fire, frightful as a thunderbolt. The Lord of Sages conquered him through sprinkling the water of loving-kindness. By this power, may yours be the victory and blessing.
With sword uplifted in his hand, Angulimala, the terrible murderer, chased the Buddha for three leagues. The Lord of Sages conquered him through his miraculous psychic power of speed. By this power, may yours be the victory and blessing.
Binding a piece of wood to her belly to simulate pregnancy, Cinca whispered wicked accusations in the midst of the people. The Lord of Sages conquered her through his serene and peaceful methods. By this power, may yours be the victory and blessing.
Disregarding truth, the wandering sectary Saccaka, who held debate as his banner of victory, came in extreme blindness. The Lord of Sages conquered him with the shining lamp of wisdom. By this power, may yours be the victory and blessing.
The powerful serpent king Nandopananda was subdued by the Buddha’s disciple, the Elder Moggallana, who took the form of a great serpent by his master’s instruction. The Lord of Sages conquered him by guiding his disciple’s psychic power. By this power, may yours be the victory and blessing.
The great Brahma king Baka, who held wrong views and believed himself eternal, pure, and supreme, was cured of his illusion. The Lord of Sages conquered him with the medicine of supreme knowledge. By this power, may yours be the victory and blessing.
He who recites or remembers these eight stanzas of the Buddha’s victories daily, without laziness, will overcome various misfortunes and achieve the happiness of liberation.

English Translation
The Buddhas, the noble lords who have attained the seat of victory, having conquered Mara the evil one together with his mount, drank the nectar of the Four Noble Truths.
The twenty-eight Buddhas, led by Tanhankara, are established upon my head.
The Buddha is established on my head, the Dhamma in my eyes, and the Sangha, the source of all virtues, is established on my chest.
Anuruddha is in my heart, Sariputta on my right, Kondanna behind me, and Moggallana on my left.
Ananda and Rahula are in my right ear, Kassapa and Mahanama are in my left ear.
Sobhita, the great sage who shines like the sun, is seated at the crown of my head.
The Elder Kumar-Kassapa, the great speaker and virtuous sage, is constantly established in my mouth.
Punna, Angulimala, Upali, Nanda, and Sivali — these five Elders are established as beauty marks on my forehead.
The remaining eighty great Elders, who are victorious disciples of the Buddha, shine with the power of their virtue and are established on different parts of my body.
The Ratana Sutta is in front of me, the Karaniya Metta Sutta on my right, the Dhajagga Sutta behind me, and the Angulimala Paritta on my left.
The Khandha, Mora, and Atanatiya protective chants are a canopy over my head, and the other protective verses form a spiritual fortress wall around me.
Consecrated by the power of the Buddhas, protected by a seven-walled fortress, may all external and internal misfortunes, caused by wind, bile, or other forces, be destroyed without remainder by the infinite power of the conqueror.
As I go about my daily duties, constantly dwelling within the armor of the Buddhas, may those great noble sages always guard and protect me.
Protected in this way, may all obstacles be destroyed by the power of the Buddha; may all adversaries be defeated by the power of the Dhamma; may all dangers be averted by the power of the Sangha. Under the protection of the True Dhamma, I live always within the Armor of the Buddha.

English Translation
Whatever beings are assembled here, whether of the earth or in the air, may all these beings have happy minds, and may they listen attentively to what is said.
Therefore, pay attention, all you beings! Show loving-kindness to the human race who, day and night, bring you offerings; therefore, protect them diligently.
Whatever wealth there is here or in other worlds, or whatever precious jewel there is in the heavens, there is none equal to the Tathagata (the Buddha). In the Buddha is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
The destruction (of defilements), dispassion, deathless, and exquisite, which the Sakyan Sage (the Buddha) attained in concentration — there is nothing equal to that Dhamma. In the Dhamma is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
The pure concentration which the supreme Buddha praised, and which they call immediate (in its results) — there is no concentration equal to that. In the Dhamma is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
The eight persons praised by the wise, who constitute four pairs — they are the disciples of the Sublime One (the Buddha) worthy of offerings; gifts given to them yield great fruit. In the Sangha is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
Those who, with a firm mind, apply themselves well and are free from desire in Gotama’s dispensation — they have reached their goal, entered the Deathless, and enjoy the peace of Liberation. In the Sangha is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
Just as a stone pillar firmly set in the earth is unshaken by the winds from the four directions, even so, I declare, is the noble person who clearly sees the Noble Truths. In the Buddha is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
Those who clearly understand the Noble Truths well-expounded by the One of profound wisdom — even if they are highly negligent, they will not take an eighth birth in the round of rebirth. In the Sangha is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
With his attainment of vision, three things are abandoned: identity-view, doubt, and whatever attachment to rules and rituals there may be. He is completely free from the four states of misery, and incapable of committing the six major wrongdoings. In the Sangha is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
Even if he commits an evil deed by body, speech, or mind, he is incapable of concealing it; for such incapacity is declared for one who has seen the Path. In the Sangha is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
Just like a woodland grove with blossoming tops in the first month of the summer heat, so is the glorious Dhamma which he taught leading to Nirvana, for the supreme benefit of all. In the Buddha is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
The Excellent One, the knower of the excellent, the giver of the excellent, the bringer of the excellent, unsurpassed, taught the excellent Dhamma. In the Buddha is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
The old is destroyed, there is no new birth; their minds are detached from future existence. With seeds destroyed and no desire for growth, the wise go out just as this lamp does. In the Sangha is this precious jewel. By this truth, may there be safety!
Whatever beings are assembled here, whether of the earth or in the air, let us pay homage to the Tathagata, the Buddha, honored by devas and humans. May there be safety!
Whatever beings are assembled here, whether of the earth or in the air, let us pay homage to the Tathagata, the Dhamma, honored by devas and humans. May there be safety!
Whatever beings are assembled here, whether of the earth or in the air, let us pay homage to the Tathagata, the Sangha, honored by devas and humans. May there be safety!

Pali Recitation
Virūpakkhehi me mettaṃ, mettaṃ Erāpathehi me,
Chabyāputtehi me mettaṃ, mettaṃ Kaṇhāgotamakehi ca.
Apādakehi me mettaṃ, mettaṃ dipādakehi me,

Mā maṃ apādako hiṃsi, mā maṃ hiṃsi dipādako,
Mā maṃ catuppado hiṃsi, mā maṃ hiṃsi bahuppado.
Sabbe sattā sabbe pāṇā, sabbe bhūtā ca kevalā,
Sabbe bhadrāni passantu, mā kañci pāpam-āgamā.
Appamāṇo Buddho, appamāṇo Dhammo, appamāṇo Saṅgho,
Pamāṇavantāni sirīsapāni, ahi vicchikā satapadī uṇṇanābhī sarabū mūsikā.
Katā me rakkhā, katā me parittā. Paṭikkamantu bhūtāni.
So’haṃ namo Bhagavato, namo sattannaṃ Sammāsambuddhānaṃ.
English Translation
I have love for the Virupakkhas, love for the Erapathas,
love for the Chabyaputtas, and love for the Kanhagotamakas.
I have love for the footless, love for the two-footed,
love for the four-footed, and love for the many-footed.
Let not the footless harm me, let not the two-footed harm me,
let not the four-footed harm me, let not the many-footed harm me.
May all beings, all breathing things, all creatures without exception, see what is auspicious, and may no evil come to anyone.
Measureless is the Buddha, measureless is the Dhamma, measureless is the Sangha. Finite are creeping things: snakes, scorpions, centipedes, spiders, lizards, and mice.
I have made this protection, I have made this defense. May all creatures depart. I pay homage to the Blessed One, homage to the seven perfectly self-awakened Buddhas.

The one who sets, the eye of the world, the sole king, golden-colored, illuminating the earth: I pay homage to you, golden-colored, illuminating the earth. Guarded by you tonight, may we live throughout the night in safety.

English Translation
The Factors of Awakening are: mindfulness, investigation of phenomena, energy, joy, tranquility, and further, concentration and equanimity. These seven factors, expounded perfectly by the all-seeing Sage, when cultivated and frequently practiced, lead to direct knowledge, to Liberation, and to Awakening. By the speaking of this truth, may you be well always.
At one time, the Lord seeing Moggallana and Kassapa, ill and in pain, recited these seven Factors of Awakening. They rejoiced in them, and at that very moment were cured of their illness. By the speaking of this truth, may you be well always.
Once, even the King of Dhamma, afflicted with illness, respectfully had the Elder Cunda recite these very factors. Rejoicing in them, he rose from that illness immediately. By the speaking of this truth, may you be well always.
These illnesses were abandoned by the three great Sages, just as defilements are destroyed by the Path, never to arise again. By the speaking of this truth, may you be well always.
